Why Did Jesus Have To Die?

The Short Answer

Jesus had to die because God is perfectly holy and perfectly just.

Sin has a real consequence, and God cannot simply ignore it.

Because God also loves us, Jesus willingly took our punishment in our place so that everyone who trusts in Him can be forgiven and have eternal life.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

God Is Perfectly Holy

The Bible describes God as completely holy.

That means He is perfectly pure, righteous, and without sin.

Because of His holiness, He cannot treat evil as though it doesn't matter.

Justice isn't the opposite of love.

Justice is part of God's character.

Just as we expect an earthly judge to uphold justice, God is the perfectly just Judge

Every Person Has Sinned

The problem isn't just that people occasionally make mistakes.

The Bible says every one of us has sinned.

Sin is anything that goes against God's perfect standard.

That includes our actions, words, attitudes, and even our hearts.

Because of sin, humanity became separated from God.

Sin Has a Penalty

One of the biggest questions people ask is,

"Why couldn't God just forgive us?"

The answer is because forgiveness always costs someone.

If someone destroys your car and you forgive them, you absorb the loss.

If someone steals from you and you choose not to demand repayment, you carry that cost yourself.

Forgiveness doesn't erase justice, it transfers the cost.

The Bible says the consequence of sin is death.

Someone has to bear that consequence.

Why Were Animal Sacrifices Offered?

Throughout the Old Testament, God commanded Israel to offer sacrifices.

These sacrifices taught an important lesson.

Sin is serious.

But those sacrifices were never meant to permanently remove sin.

Instead, they pointed ahead to Someone greater.

Every lamb, every sacrifice, every Day of Atonement anticipated the perfect sacrifice that would one day come

Jesus Was the Perfect Sacrifice

Unlike every other person who has ever lived, Jesus never sinned.

Because He was completely without sin, He alone could take the place of sinners.

John the Baptist even called Him:

"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"

The sacrifices pointed to Him all along.

Jesus Chose to Take Our Place

Jesus wasn't forced to die.

He willingly laid down His life.

On the cross, He bore the punishment our sins deserved.

God's justice was satisfied.

God's love was displayed.

This is why Christians often say Jesus died "for us."

Why Didn't Jesus Stay Dead?

If Jesus had only died, sin would still appear victorious.

Instead, three days later, He rose from the dead.

His resurrection proved that sin and death had been defeated.

Because He lives, everyone who trusts in Him can receive eternal life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Couldn't God Just Forgive Us Without Jesus?

Scripture (KJV)

Romans 3:25–26

"Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus."

Why Was Blood Required?

Throughout the Bible, blood represents life. God established the sacrificial system to show that sin brings death and that forgiveness comes through a sacrifice. These sacrifices pointed forward to Jesus Christ, whose blood was shed once and for all to provide eternal redemption.

Hebrews 9:22

"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."
